Biography of Susan Desmond-Hellmann
Susan Desmond-Hellmann is the head of the department for the development of pharmacological products at Genentech. Throughout her career, Susan has been involved in medical research. Before joining Genentech, Hellmann served as the deputy director of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Research Institute, where she led the Taxol project. She also worked as an adjunct professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), specializing in hematology and oncology.
As the head of the department for the development of pharmacological products at Genentech, Susan is responsible for various aspects of the company's activities. She oversees operations, establishes relationships, develops production strategies and tactics, and monitors the implementation of products. Susan is also a member of Genentech's executive committee. She has been working for the company since 1995, starting as a scientist involved in clinical research. In 1996, she became the Chief Medical Officer, and in 1999, she was appointed as the Vice President of Product Development and Operations. In addition to her positions at Genentech, Susan holds the position of adjunct professor at UCSF.
Susan's career has progressed rapidly, and in March 2004, she was appointed as the company's president. Her work has always been focused on medical research. In 2006, Susan Desmond-Hellmann was named Woman of the Year, and Fortune magazine included her in the list of "50 Most Powerful Businesswomen in the World" for four consecutive years.
Throughout her active career, Hellmann has received numerous awards and honors. She earned a bachelor's degree and a medical degree from the University of Nevada. Additionally, Susan Desmond-Hellmann was awarded a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Berkeley in California.
