Susan Downey: Biography
Susan Nicole Downey (nee Levin) was born on November 6, 1973, in Schaumburg, Illinois, to a Jewish family. She developed an interest in the movie industry at the age of twelve. In 1991, she graduated from Schaumburg High School and went on to earn a degree from the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts.
Early Career
Downey began her career in the film industry at Threshold Entertainment, where she oversaw various film and television projects. She later became co-chair of Dark Castle Entertainment and executive vice president of production at Silver Pictures, joining the latter in 1999. During this period, she was involved in the production of horror films such as "Thir13en Ghosts" and "Swordfish." In 2002, she made her debut as a co-producer with the horror film "Ghost Ship." She continued to produce films such as "Cradle 2 the Grave," "Gothika," and "House of Wax."
Team Downey and Career Success
In 2005, Downey took on the role of executive producer for the crime comedy "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," which received critical acclaim. She went on to produce films such as "The Brave One," "RocknRolla," "Orphan," and "Whiteout." She also served as an executive producer for the post-apocalyptic drama "The Book of Eli."
During the production of "RocknRolla," Downey's husband, Robert Downey Jr., expressed interest in working with director Guy Ritchie on a film about Sherlock Holmes. With Susan's help, Robert secured the lead role in "Sherlock Holmes" (2009), which went on to be a critical and commercial success. The film earned over $500 million worldwide and garnered Robert his third Golden Globe, as well as his first in the category of Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
Team Downey and Family Life
In June 2010, Susan and Robert announced the establishment of their production company, Team Downey, in collaboration with Warner Bros. The company's first project was the film "Yucatan." Team Downey also produced the family drama "The Judge" (2014), in which Robert played the lead role. They are also set to produce a film based on the sinking of the USS Indianapolis in 1985, titled "Indianapolis," based on the eyewitness account of Hunter Alan Scott.
Susan and Robert got engaged on November 5, 2003, and married on August 27, 2005, in a Jewish ceremony in Amagansett, New York. Robert has credited Susan with helping him overcome his drug and alcohol addiction, stating that she played a crucial role in his success. They have two children together, a son named Exton Elias Downey, born on January 7, 2012, and a daughter named Avri Roel Downey, born on November 4, 2014.
Robert Downey Jr. has frequently expressed his appreciation for Susan and their partnership, calling her an incredible woman and describing their marriage as a symbiotic relationship. As a tribute to his wife, he even has a tattoo on his bicep with the words "Suzie Q."
