Biography of Susan Oliver

Susan Oliver, born Charlotte Gercke on February 13, 1932, in New York, was an American film and television actress as well as a talented director. She was the daughter of journalist George Gercke and practicing astrologer Ruth Hale Oliver. In June 1949, Susan and her mother moved to Southern California, where her mother worked as a well-known astrologer in Hollywood. It was during this time that Susan began seriously considering a career in acting. She soon changed her name to Susan Oliver and began to turn her dreams into reality.

In 1949, Susan returned to the East Coast and enrolled in Swarthmore College. Afterward, she moved to New York to study the art of drama at the Neighborhood Playhouse. In 1955, Susan Oliver made her television debut with a small role in the multi-episode film "Goodyear TV Playhouse." Prior to this, she had been actively working in advertising and participating in various television projects. In 1957, Oliver made her debut on Broadway in Robert Sherwood's comedy "Small War on Murray Hill." Theater enthusiasts were pleasantly surprised by her talent and greatly appreciated her performances.

With success on the theatrical stage came demand in the television industry. Oliver appeared in television projects such as "Kaiser Aluminum Hour," "The United States Steel Hour," and "Matinee Theater." She then went to Hollywood, where she appeared in an episode of "Climax!" as well as the films "Wagon Train" and "Country Cousin." Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Susan Oliver actively acted in television films and occasionally appeared on stage. Her work was repeatedly recognized, and she was nominated for an Emmy for her role in the soap opera "Days of our Lives."

In the 1980s, Oliver began to appear in smaller roles, but her popularity remained strong. She was not only known for her acting skills but also for her talent as a pilot. In 1967, she became the fourth woman to fly across the Atlantic and documented her journey in her autobiography.

Susan Oliver, a devoted smoker, passed away on May 10, 1990, in Woodland Hills, California.
