Susan Rice: A Trailblazing Diplomat and Policymaker
Susan Elizabeth Rice is an accomplished diplomat and policymaker who has served as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations since 2009.
Early Life and Education
Born in Washington, D.C. in 1964, Rice grew up in a prominent African American family. She graduated from the prestigious National Cathedral School and received her bachelor's degree in history from Stanford University. Rice then went on to Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, earning a master's degree in 1988 and a doctorate in international relations in 1990.
Early Career
After completing a consulting role for Michael Dukakis's 1988 presidential campaign, Rice worked for McKinsey & Company from 1991 to 1993. In 1993, she was appointed to the National Security Council by President Bill Clinton, becoming the youngest official appointed to the body.
Clinton Administration
In her various roles within the National Security Council, Rice played a significant role in shaping U.S. foreign policy, particularly in Africa. She served as Director of International Organizations and Peacekeeping from 1993 to 1995, Senior Director for African Affairs and Special Assistant to the President from 1995 to 1997, and Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs from 1997 to 2001.
Post-Clinton Era
Following the end of the Clinton administration, Rice worked as a principal at Intellibridge International, an intelligence firm. She later joined the Brookings Institution as a senior fellow, focusing on foreign policy issues. Rice was a vocal critic of the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003.
Obama Campaign and Administration
Rice played a key role in Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign, serving as his senior foreign policy advisor. After Obama's victory, he nominated Rice as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Rice was confirmed by the Senate in January 2009.
Legacy
As Ambassador to the UN, Rice has been involved in numerous high-profile diplomatic initiatives.
