Biography of Susie Tompkins
Susie Tompkins is an American designer and entrepreneur who is best known for co-founding the global fashion company "Esprit de Corp." Born in the United States, Tompkins began her career in the fashion industry in 1964 when she met her future husband, Olympic skier Doug Tompkins, while hitchhiking near Lake Tahoe. They fell in love and got married six months later.
Together with their friend Jane, the Tompkinses launched their own custom clothing business, which quickly gained success in its first four years. In 1971, they became involved with Michael Ying, the founder of what would later become the "Esprit Far East Group." They acquired a stake in the company, which led to the birth of "Esprit de Corp." The company produced seven different clothing lines, each with its own brand. By the end of the 1970s, "Esprit de Corp." was generating annual sales of around $120 million.
As the business continued to thrive, Doug and Susie bought out Jane's share and expanded their operations in Hong Kong and Düsseldorf, laying the foundation for the future international organization. The American style of the corporation gained popularity worldwide.
In the 1980s, the founders of "Esprit" expanded their markets to include Canada, Chile, Germany, New Zealand, the Philippines, Switzerland, and the United States. The company relied on extensive mail-order catalogs, which allowed customers to order products conveniently from their homes. These catalogs revolutionized the existing mail delivery system. "Esprit" continued to grow rapidly, owning three million square feet of business space worldwide, primarily in Europe and the Pacific region, and generating over a billion dollars in revenue in 2001.
Despite their immense success, Susie and Doug never stopped pursuing the development of their company. They introduced new product lines, including toys, sportswear, and clothing for newborns. According to German analysts, 84% of women in Germany use clothing from this brand. In the United States, "Esprit" ranked 52nd on the list of the country's most recognizable brands.
Susie Tompkins' entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to her business have made her a prominent figure in the fashion industry. Her contributions to the success of "Esprit de Corp." have solidified the brand's reputation and global recognition.
