Biography of Prince Augustus Frederick of Sussex
Prince Augustus Frederick of Sussex was the sixth son of King George III of England. Unlike his brothers, he did not serve in the army or navy, but rather dedicated himself to bibliophilia and politics. While in Rome, he married a Catholic woman named Augusta Murray in 1793. Augusta was the daughter of the Scottish Earl of Dunmore. Despite Prince Sussex renouncing all his hereditary rights, King George III declared their marriage invalid based on the family law of the English dynasty. Several years later, Sussex separated from his wife.
Political Career
In the House of Lords, Prince Sussex aligned himself mostly with the opposition party. He voted in favor of Catholic emancipation, the abolition of slavery, parliamentary reform, and other progressive causes.
Bibliophile
Prince Sussex amassed a rich library, particularly focused on editions and translations of the Bible and manuscripts. This library was described by Th. Jos. Pettigrew in his book published in London in 1827.
Marriages
In 1831, Augustus Frederick married again without royal consent, this time to Lady Cecilia Buggins (Underwood), the daughter of an Irish Earl of Arran. In 1840, she was granted the title of Duchess of Inverness.
Masonic Leader
Prince Augustus Frederick was a prominent figure in Freemasonry. From 1813 to 1843, he served as the Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England.
