Svetla Bozhkova: A Distinguished Bulgarian Academic and Politician
Early Life and EducationSvetla Bozhkova was born on September 28, 1958, in Bulgaria. She holds two higher degrees in economics and journalism, both earned from the University of National and World Economy in Sofia.
Academic Career
From 1981 to 1995, Dr. Bozhkova worked as a research associate at the Institute of Economics and Organization of Agriculture at the Agricultural Academy. From 1994 to 2005, she served as the manager of the Agricultural Market Information System. Additionally, she held the positions of Director of the Institute of Agrarian Economics (2002-2003) and Executive Director of the National Center for Agrarian Sciences (2003-2005). Dr. Bozhkova is the author of over 140 scientific publications, including five books and six monographs in the fields of agricultural economics, land relations, and food marketing.
Government Service
Dr. Bozhkova served as Deputy Minister of Agriculture in the government of Sergei Stanishev (2005-2009). She also chaired the Board of Directors of the Agricultural Academy from 2005 to 2011.
International Recognition and Honors
Dr. Bozhkova is an Honorary Doctor of the Agricultural Academy and a member of the Board of Directors of the Union of Scientists in Bulgaria. She is also a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences (since 2010) and the Agricultural and Forestry Sciences Section of the Romanian Academy.
Parliamentary Service
In May 2013, Dr. Bozhkova was elected to the Bulgarian Parliament from the coalition BSP for Bulgaria. In the 42nd National Assembly, she served as Chair of the Committee on Agriculture and Food. She held the position of Deputy Chair of the same committee in the 43rd and 44th assemblies. Currently, she is a member of parliament in the 44th National Assembly, serving on the Committee on Budget and Finance.
