Her coaches, the married couple Kira and Vladimir Trzheskalams, recognized her potential and dreamt of creating a professional basketball team in St. Petersburg, with Abrosimova taking one of the leading positions. She realized the vast difference between the opportunities offered in the States and what she could achieve in Russia. University and Olympic Career
In 1997, Svetlana Abrosimova showcased her skills at the Junior World Championship. It was after this competition that she received an offer from the coach of the University of Connecticut basketball team to join their squad. This marked the beginning of her outstanding basketball career.
Initially, Abrosimova experienced discomfort and a strong longing for her homeland in the United States. However, over time, she adjusted and found her place. The university coaches demanded impressive results from the athlete, which required her to train constantly to maintain a high level of performance.
In 2000, Abrosimova participated in the Olympic Games in Sydney as part of the Russian national team. However, she was disqualified from the Russian Olympic team for unclear and unjustified reasons during the 2004 Olympics. The main explanation for this incident was that Abrosimova did not obey her coaches from St. Petersburg and the team, which led to her being significantly ignored in Russia. In 2008, Svetlana Abrosimova once again represented the Russian national basketball team in the Olympics.
