The Formation of Svoi
In 1996, the rock band Svoi was formed in the Russian city of Izhevsk. The band's origins can be traced back to the early 1990s, when guitarist and vocalist Maxim Melnikov (aka "Max") began writing original material. Along with drummer Oleg Maslov ("Jin") and bassist Kirill Grigoshin ("Kill"), the band initially operated under the name "Svoi," a moniker suggested by Valery Perevozchikov of the band "Disciplina."
The Early Years
Despite their initial enthusiasm, the band faced challenges, including the departure of Stieve, their drummer. After a brief period of experimentation with different drummers, Roman Tsygvintsev ("Tsinik") joined the band, solidifying their rhythm section. However, conflicts within the group led to the departure of Olga Chechora, their rhythm guitarist, in 1998.
The Rebirth
Bassist Vadim Petukhov ("Vasya") joined the band in 1998, bringing with him a new level of experience and musicality. With the addition of drummer Alexander Savchenko, the band's sound evolved towards a heavier, more intense style. However, personal issues forced Savchenko to leave the group in 1999, leading to the return of Tsygvintsev.
The Rise of ONZO
With a stable lineup, the band recorded a demo in 2000, showcasing their eclectic sound that blended hard rock with elements of art rock, hardcore, and even jazz. In 2001, they changed their name to ONZO, marking a departure from their previous musical direction.
The Return of Svoi
Despite the name change, the band's musical identity remained closely tied to their early work. In 2003, they returned to the name Svoi, which had become synonymous with their unique blend of musical influences.
The Legacy
Over the years, Svoi has shared the stage with established Russian rock bands such as Agatha Christie, Lyapis Trubetskoy, and Grazhdanskaya Oborona. Their eclectic sound and energetic performances have earned them a dedicated fanbase and critical acclaim. Today, Svoi continues to perform and create new music, leaving a lasting legacy in the Russian rock scene.
