French Conductor
Pierre Cambreling is a renowned French conductor who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music.
Early Career
Cambreling studied at the Paris Conservatory and began his musical journey as a trombonist. He played with the Lyon Symphony Orchestra and the Lyon Opera before transitioning to conducting in 1975, serving as Music Director of the Lyon Opera until 1981.
International Acclaim
In 1976, Pierre Boulez invited Cambreling to lead the Ensemble Intercontemporain. This marked a turning point in his career, leading him to guest conduct prestigious orchestras worldwide, including La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Vienna State Opera.
Opera Triumphs
In 1992, Cambreling conducted the premiere of Olivier Messiaen's "Saint François d'Assise" at the Opéra Bastille in Paris. He served as Music Director of the Frankfurt Opera from 1993 to 1997, and has been Chief Conductor of the SWR Symphony Orchestra in Baden-Baden and Freiburg since 1999.
Contemporary Champion
While renowned for his interpretations of classical repertoire, Cambreling has also been a passionate advocate for contemporary music. He has conducted works by composers such as Helmut Lachenmann, Morton Feldman, Wolfgang Rihm, Peter Eötvös, Beat Furrer, Matthias Pintscher, and Misato Mochizuki.

Cambreling has received numerous accolades throughout his career, including Conductor of the Year for the 1993-1994 season. The Frankfurt Opera under his leadership was named Opera House of the Year in 1995. He has also been awarded the prestigious Grand European Prize for Conducting.
