Sylvia Matthews Burwell: Trailblazing Politician and Healthcare Advocate
Early Life and Education
Sylvia Matthews was born in Hinton, West Virginia, to Cleo and William Matthews. Her maternal grandparents, immigrants from Greece, instilled in her a strong work ethic. Sylvia excelled academically, graduating summa cum laude from Harvard University with a degree in government. She then earned a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University, where she received a bachelor's degree in philosophy, economics, and politics.
Early Career in Government and Business
After graduating, Sylvia worked as a consultant at McKinsey and Company. She played a key role in the economic transition team for President Bill Clinton and later served in various positions within the Clinton administration, including Director of Personnel for the National Economic Council and Chief of Staff to Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin.
Leadership in Global Health
In 2001, Sylvia joined the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, where she rose to the position of Chief Operating Officer. She championed global health initiatives, particularly in the areas of HIV/AIDS prevention and vaccination.
Walmart Foundation Presidency
In 2011, Sylvia became President of the Walmart Foundation, focusing on improving health, education, and economic opportunity for underserved communities.
Obama Administration
President Barack Obama appointed Sylvia as Director of the Office of Management and Budget in 2009. She played a critical role in implementing the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.

In 2014, President Obama nominated Sylvia to serve as Secretary of Health and Human Services. The Senate confirmed her by a 78-17 vote, making her the first African American woman to hold this position.
