Cindy Hyde-Smith: From State Senator to U.S. Senator

Early Life and Education

Cindy Hyde-Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. Before entering politics, she pursued a career in public service and business.

State Senator

In 2000, Hyde-Smith was elected to the Mississippi State Senate, representing the 39th district. Initially a conservative Democrat, she switched to the Republican Party in 2010. She served as the chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee from 2004.

Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce

In 2011, Hyde-Smith was elected as Mississippi Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce. In this role, she oversaw agricultural programs and initiatives within the state.

U.S. Senator

On March 21, 2018, Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant announced his intention to appoint Hyde-Smith as the successor to retiring U.S. Senator Thad Cochran. She was sworn into office on April 9, becoming the first woman from Mississippi to serve in Congress.

Election to the Senate

In November 2018, Hyde-Smith won a special election runoff against Democrat Mike Espy. This victory confirmed her position as the first female U.S. Senator from Mississippi.
