Biography of Tabaré Ramón Vázquez Rosas

Tabaré Ramón Vázquez Rosas, the former President of Uruguay, was born on January 17, 1940, in La Teja, a working-class neighborhood in Montevideo. Despite coming from a modest background, his parents made every effort to ensure he received a higher education. At the age of 29, Vázquez became an oncologist.

In the late 1980s, Vázquez made a name for himself in politics by participating in the investigation of crimes committed by the military junta that ruled the country from 1973 to 1985. He represented the left-wing coalition Broad Front and won the mayoral elections in Montevideo in 1989. In 1994, he became the leader of the Broad Front.

In a historic moment for Uruguay, Vázquez, at the age of 64 and as the former mayor of Montevideo, was elected as the country's president, becoming the first representative of leftist forces to hold this position. He won the presidential election in the first round, receiving over 50 percent of the votes. It is worth noting that the two centrist parties, Blanco and Colorado, which had alternated in power since the 19th century, suffered a crushing defeat.

Despite facing accusations from his opponents that he was not just leftist but a "true Marxist," Vázquez prevailed in the election. Even the candidate from the ruling Colorado Party failed to garner more than 10 percent of the votes.

In addition to his political career, Vázquez has a passion for football. For 10 years, until 1989, he served as the president of the football club "Progreso." During his leadership, the club won the title of Uruguayan champion for the first time.

Vázquez is married and has three sons.
