Jude Bryant: President of Liberia
Early Life and EducationJude Bryant was born in Liberia and received his higher education in economics abroad.
Business Career
In 1977, Bryant established his own business in industrial equipment supplies.
Entry into Politics
When Liberia lifted its ban on political activity in 1984, Bryant founded the Liberian Action Party (LAP). The LAP was considered a favorite in the 1985 elections, but military leader Samuel Doe declared himself the winner.
Presidency
Despite his relatively low profile in Liberia, Bryant was chosen as president in a neutral capacity. He assumed office in August 2003, tasked with restoring peace and stability after years of civil war.
Challenges Faced
Bryant's administration grappled with the aftermath of a 14-year civil war and three years of insurgency against former president Charles Taylor. Taylor fled to Nigeria in August 2003, where he was granted political asylum. The International Court in The Hague has charged him with war crimes.
