Biography of Tadeusz Stefan Ploski
Tadeusz Stefan Ploski was a Polish Catholic bishop, a brigadier general, and a Doctor of Canon Law. He served as the head of the Military Ordinariate of the Polish Army from 2004 to 2010.
Early Life and Education
In 1976, Ploski entered the "Hosianum" seminary in Olsztyn, where he studied philosophy and theology. On June 6, 1982, he was ordained as a priest in the cathedral of Olsztyn and served as a vicar in the parish of St. Joseph in Moronge for a year. From 1983 to 1986, Ploski studied canon law at the Catholic University of Lublin.
Career
In 1986, Ploski worked at the Warmian Diocesan Curia and served as a judge in the diocesan court. From 1986 to 1992, he was the chief editor of "Warmińskich Wiadomości Diecezjalnych" and a spiritual director at the Pedagogical College and the Academy of Agriculture and Technology in Olsztyn. In 1992, he was assigned to the Military Ordinariate of the Polish Army.
On June 1, 1992, Ploski became a state notary. In 1993, he earned a doctoral degree in canon law from the Faculty of Canon Law at the Catholic Theological Academy. From 1994, he served as the head of the Pastoral Department of the Field Curia in Warsaw. He also underwent advanced training in operational and strategic matters at the National Defense Academy in Warsaw in 1994.
From 1995 to 2000, Ploski served as the dean of the Upper Vistula Military Units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration. He also worked as a referent and guardian of seminary students at the Military Ordinariate from 1996 to 2004. Additionally, he was a professor of religion at the Faculty of Law and Administration at the Warmian-Masurian University in Olsztyn from 1998.
On March 10, 1999, Ploski received the dignity of prelate of His Holiness. He served as a chaplain for the Government Protection Bureau from 2000 and became the dean of the bureau in 2001. He was also the editor of the Military Ordinariate journal, "Nasza Służba," from 1995 to 2001. Ploski worked as a correspondent for Vatican Radio and the Catholic Information Agency from 1995 to 2004.
Head of the Military Ordinariate
On October 16, 2004, Ploski was ordained as a Catholic military bishop and became the head of the Military Ordinariate of the Polish Army. From November 26, 2004, he served as the national pastor for war veterans. He was also appointed as a delegate of the Polish Episcopal Conference for pastoral care among scouts from March 9, 2005. Ploski held various positions, including being a member of the Council for the Protection of Monuments of Struggle and Martyrdom and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Warsaw Uprising Museum.
On April 15, 2010, Ploski was posthumously promoted to the rank of brigadier general. He tragically died in the crash of the presidential plane in Smolensk on April 10, 2010, while on his way to a ceremony commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Katyn Massacre.
Awards and Recognitions
Throughout his career, Ploski received numerous awards and honors. He was awarded the Commander Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta posthumously in 2010. He also received the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta on August 8, 2008, the Gold Cross of Merit on April 20, 2007, and the Silver Cross of Merit on February 17, 1999. Additionally, he was decorated with the Silver Medal "Armed Forces in the Service of the Homeland" and the Gold Medal "For Merit to the Police."
