Early Life and Career

Takashi Amano, a renowned Japanese photographer, aquarist, and aquascaping expert, was born on July 18, 1954, in Niigata, Japan. From a young age, he developed a deep fascination with aquariums and photography, pursuing both pursuits alongside his cycling career.

Professional Cycling

As a professional cyclist, Amano enjoyed a remarkable 17-year career. He participated in 1078 races, earning a total of $1.6 million in prize money, which he invested in his hobbies. In 1990, Amano retired from cycling.

Photographic Expeditions and Nature Aquariums

Amano's passion for photography led him to embark on numerous expeditions into the rainforests of the Amazon, West Africa, and Borneo, as well as the pristine forests of Japan. During these trips, he captured countless images of unspoiled nature, which were exhibited in international exhibitions and publications.

Inspired by his observations of natural aquatic ecosystems, Amano developed the "Nature Aquarium" concept, which emphasized recreating natural underwater environments in the confines of home aquariums. This groundbreaking approach revolutionized aquascaping.

Aqua Design Amano (ADA)

In 1982, Amano founded Aqua Design Amano (ADA), a company specializing in producing high-quality aquarium equipment. ADA became a global leader in the industry, manufacturing a range of products, including substrates, CO2 systems, and plant-trimming scissors.

As CEO of ADA, Amano played a key role in designing and creating large-scale aquariums, such as the 40-meter-long "Forests Underwater" at the Lisbon Oceanarium. This monumental project showcased his artistic vision and technical expertise.

IAPL Contest

Amano established the International Aquatic Plants Layout Contest (IAPLC) in 2001. This prestigious annual competition, sponsored by ADA, recognizes excellence in aquascaping. With over 2300 entries from 64 countries in 2014, the IAPLC has become the most renowned aquascaping contest worldwide.

Takashi Amano was an influential figure in the fields of photography, aquascaping, and environmental conservation. His pioneering work in natural aquariums set a new standard for the hobby and inspired countless aquarists.
