Antanas Sutkus is widely recognized as a classic of Lithuanian photography. His contribution to the field has spanned decades, leaving an enduring mark on the art form.
Early Life and Education
Born in 1939, Sutkus began his journey in photography in 1945, studying in Kaunas until 1957. His pursuit of knowledge continued at Vilnius University's Faculty of Law (1958-1960) and Vilnius Pedagogical Institute's Faculty of Music (1960-1963).
Professional Career
Sutkus embarked on a successful career in photojournalism, serving as a photo correspondent for the weekly "Literature and Art" from 1963 to 1965. In subsequent years, he held prominent positions such as Head of the Illustration Department at the magazine "Spheres of Culture" (1992-1998) and Head of the Art Photography Section at the Lithuanian Art Museum (1997-2001).
Influence in the Photographic Community
Sutkus played a significant role in the development of the Lithuanian photography community. He was a founding member and organizer of the Lithuanian Photographic Art Society (1968-1969), serving as Chairman of its Art Council from 1970 to 1980. Additionally, he served as a consultant and board member for the Lithuanian Photographic Art Union from 1981 to 1991. His influence extends to being a member of the Lithuanian National Awards in Culture and Arts commission from 1991 to 1997 and again from 2007 to the present.
