Talant Duishebaev, a Master of Sports in handball and an Olympic gold medalist (1992), was born in Kyrgyzstan. As a member of the Unified Team, he captained the squad that triumphed at the 1992 Olympics. Later, as part of the Russian national team, Duishebaev celebrated victory at the 1993 World Championships.
International Success with Spain
Following the dissolution of the USSR, Duishebaev relocated to Spain, becoming a citizen in 1995. With the Spanish national team, he competed in three Olympic Games, earning two bronze medals in Atlanta and Sydney. His final Olympic appearance at Athens 2004 ended in a heartbreaking loss to Germany, which stretched into four overtimes and penalties. Additionally, Duishebaev guided the Spanish team to three podium finishes at the European Championships.
Club Career Highlights
Duishebaev's club career is marked by his tenure with Teka Santander, where he twice claimed the Spanish championship and the Cup Winners' Cup. In 2001, he joined Ciudad Real, which achieved its first league title in 2003/04. The following season, the club reached the Champions League final. In June 2005, Duishebaev held his farewell match at the Don Quixote Sports Palace, signaling the end of his playing career and his transition to coaching.
Coaching Success
In his first year as coach, Duishebaev led Ciudad Real to victory in the Champions League. An injury to the team's starting playmaker forced the 38-year-old Duishebaev to return to the court in 2006/07. He quickly regained his form, contributing to the club's Super Cup and Spanish championship wins. In 2007/08, Duishebaev returned to focus on coaching, guiding Ciudad Real to a second Champions League triumph.
