Vigo Abalde: A Rising Star in Spanish Basketball
Early Life and Basketball LineageVigo Abalde, a Spanish basketball player, was born into a family of basketball enthusiasts. Her father, Alberto Abalde Rodríguez, was a professional player from 1980 to 1993, while her brother, Alberto Abalde Díaz, also plays professionally for Real Madrid.
Club Career
Abalde began her basketball journey in her hometown of Vigo, Spain, where she represented Celta de Vigo Baloncesto. At just 15 years old, she made her debut in Spain's top-tier league.
NCAA Success
In 2007, Abalde joined the Lamar Cardinals in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). She quickly made an impact, becoming the sixth player in Lamar history to earn All-Southland Conference First Team honors and the second to be named the SLC Freshman of the Year. During her lone season, she averaged 16.0 points per game and set a school single-game scoring record with 44 points.
Professional Career
After one year in the NCAA, Abalde opted to pursue a professional career in Europe. She played for Baloncesto Rivas, UNB Obenasa Navarra, and several French clubs before returning to Spain in 2013 to join Perfumerías Avenida. With Perfumerías, she won two Spanish Cups, two Spanish SuperCups, and twice finished as the league runner-up.
In search of more playing time, Abalde spent the next three seasons with different clubs before signing with the newly promoted Valencia Basket in 2018.
