Tamara Katsy: Ukrainian and Greek Singer

Tamara Katsy, born on November 11, 1958, in the village of Sartana (then known as Primorskoye), was a Ukrainian and Greek singer. She was the lead vocalist of the ensembles "Sartana Gems" and "Ellines". Katsy was a laureate of republican, all-Union, and international festivals of folk art held in Ukraine, Russia, Greece, and Cyprus.

Early Life and Career

Tamara Katsy was born into a family of civil servants. From 1978 to 1982, she worked as a secretary for the Komsomol organization of Vocational-Technical School No. 1 in Primorskoye. In 1983, she graduated from the Donetsk Cultural and Enlightenment School with a specialization in choral conducting through distance learning.

Katsy joined the Greek folk amateur ensemble "Sartana Gems" in 1978 and continued her involvement with the group until 1993. In 1993, she moved to Moscow, where she recorded seventeen phonograms of Greek songs, released two audio albums and music videos filmed in Greece and Russia. Additionally, she served as the musical editor and singer in the first video film about Greeks from the former USSR titled "Pages of History of Greeks in the Black Sea Region," directed by H. Triandafilov.

Contributions to Greek Culture

Tamara Katsy was one of the initiators of the Greek national-cultural club "Ellines Priazovya" in 1993, where she led the culture section. She actively participated in the creation of the Federation of Greek Societies of Ukraine and headed the cultural department. In 1998, under the guidance of Hrisa Araboglou, the Center for Development and Study of the Culture of the Black Sea Countries released a disc featuring nine songs performed by Tamara Katsy in the Rumey dialect.

Tragic Accident and Legacy

On June 12, 1999, while traveling to Mariupol, Tamara Katsy tragically died in a car accident. She was laid to rest in Sartana. Throughout her career, Katsy received several accolades and honors for her contributions to folk art. These include being a diploma holder of the All-Union Creative Workshop of Folk Art in Moscow in 1987, a diploma holder of the Second International Folklore Festival in Kyiv in 1990, and a winner of the World Festival of Greeks Abroad in Athens in 1997.

In 1998, Tamara Katsy was part of the program "Days of Greek Culture in Ukraine". In 1999, she participated in the "Euxinos Thessaloniki" Festival ("Hospitable Thessaloniki"). In her memory, the International Open Festival of Greek Song named after Tamara Katsy is held every two years in Mariupol. The festival is organized by the World Council of Greeks Abroad in the peripheral countries of the former USSR and the Federation of Greek Societies of Ukraine.
