Tancrède Melet: The Daring French Highliner
32-year-old French highliner Tancrède Melet, notorious for his death-defying stunts, was rehearsing for his latest performance when it became his last. The fearless Frenchman fell 30 meters (98 feet) to his death while attempting a daring walk between two hot-air balloons.
An Adrenaline Junkie and Master of Height
Melet was an adrenaline junkie and master of height, excelling as a highliner, base jumper, skyliner, and wingsuit flyer. He captivated audiences with his high-altitude tightrope walks and graceful leaps from airplanes in a wingsuit. As part of a groundbreaking project, he embarked on a tightrope walk between two hot-air balloons suspended above the ground.
A Tragic Accident
Witnesses reported that one of the balloons unexpectedly lifted off during the performance. Melet clung to the edge of the basket, hanging by his fingertips. As the balloon ascended approximately 30 meters, the highliner plummeted to the ground. The tragedy occurred in Drome, France.
A Member of the Acrobatic Elite
Melet was a member of the renowned stunt group known as 'Flying Frenchies,' also known as 'Skyliners.' The group gained fame for their perilous wire walks over mountain peaks and skyscrapers around the world. A tribute on the Flying Frenchies' Facebook page read: "A lover of life to an uncommon extent, Tancrède Melet has left us much too early."
Early Life and Discovery of Passion
Born in Meurthe-et-Moselle and raised in Herault, Melet found his calling amidst the towering cliffs of the Verdon Gorge. He performed the majority of his stunts in the mountains and hills of the Upper Provence region. According to the Flying Frenchies website, Melet left his engineering career four years ago to pursue "his adventure towards freedom."
A Life of Challenges and Achievements
"Try everything at least once" was his motto. Melet pushed boundaries and combined his diverse skills to achieve visually stunning results. His passion for heights led to appearances in commercials, music videos, concerts, and lectures.
A Legacy of Inspiration
The Flying Frenchies' Facebook page was flooded with tributes to Melet. "All my condolences and thoughts for his family," wrote Pascal Corne. "He was doing what he loved. He was living with passion. He was living." "Farewell my friend. I want to thank you for making us dream! Peace to your soul, and may your heart continue to fly as high as it always has."
Tancrède Melet is survived by his partner, Tiffany Braie, and their young daughter.
