Taras Rad, Ukrainian Paralympic Champion
Taras Rad is a Ukrainian Paralympic skier and biathlete who has achieved significant success in his career. Born in a sports-oriented family in Ternopil, he began competing in sports from a young age.
Early Life and Injury
At the age of 14, Taras suffered a leg injury. Despite proper treatment, an infection developed and his leg had to be amputated below the knee. Despite this setback, he returned to sports in 2014.
Return to Sports
Initially engaged in recreational sports like table tennis, Taras later joined a training center for individuals with disabilities. He excelled in various sports, including skiing, biathlon, cycling, and swimming.
Education and Training
As a student at Ternopil School-Collegium named after Joseph Slepoi, Taras earned two silver medals at the 2017 World Championships. He is currently pursuing a degree in Physical Education at Ternopil National Pedagogical University named after Volodymyr Hnatyuk. Despite his busy schedule, he manages his studies through Skype while on training sessions.
Paralympic Glory
In 2018, Taras made history at the Paralympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. With his exceptional shooting skills, he won a gold medal in the biathlon event, becoming the fourth Ukrainian athlete to win gold at those Games.
Accolades and Recognition
For his achievements, Taras was awarded the Order of Merit, III degree (2018).
Interesting Facts
Taras was only 18 years old when he made his Paralympic debut in 2018, making him the youngest member of the Ukrainian Paralympic team.
He holds the distinction of being one of the youngest Ukrainian Paralympic champions, winning his first gold medal at the age of 18.
