Early Life:Tarrare, a Frenchman born around 1772 near Lyon, possessed an insatiable appetite from an early age. Due to his extraordinary eating habits, his impoverished parents were forced to cast him out.
Life on the Road:
Joining an unsavory band of thieves, prostitutes, and con artists, Tarrare's life became a relentless quest for food. As a street performer, he consumed bizarre items for the amusement of crowds, including rocks, corks, live animals like cats and rats, and his favorite delicacy, snake meat.
Appearance and Peculiar Traits:
Despite his voracious appetite, the 17-year-old Tarrare weighed only 45 kilograms. His frail physique, pale complexion, and diminutive stature contrasted with his enormous mouth and poor teeth. When famished, his stomach would hang in loose folds, which he could wrap around his waist. After eating, his belly would distend like a balloon, its size seemingly impossible for such a slight body. His cheeks, capable of stretching like rubber, allowed him to hold up to a dozen eggs or apples at once. His skin was always damp, emitting a constant, unpleasant odor.
Medical Enigma:
Tarrare's excessive appetite remained a medical mystery, with theories ranging from thyroid disorders to hypothalamic dysfunction. Despite his death, the true cause of his condition has never been fully explained.
Military Service:
When the War of the First Coalition broke out, Tarrare joined the army. The standard military rations were a mere mockery for the famished soldier. He resorted to bartering with other soldiers for their portions and raiding waste bins, consuming anything edible. His body began to deteriorate, landing him in a military hospital with extreme malnutrition. No amount of rations could satisfy him, and he resorted to stealing food from the kitchen and even eating a live cat. One incident in the hospital cafeteria, where he was forcibly restrained by staff as he charged towards a lavish meal prepared for 15 dignitaries, became infamous.
Espionage and Downfall:
Tarrare's extraordinary ability to swallow and regurgitate objects caught the attention of the military. He became a spy for the Rhine Army, carrying secret messages hidden within his stomach. However, his spy career ended abruptly when he failed his first mission and narrowly escaped execution.
Cannibalism Accusations:
Tarrare's wandering existence brought him back to the army hospital, where his unyielding hunger reignited. Despite efforts to control his appetite, it was eventually suspected that he suffered from a mental disorder. He was transferred to an asylum, but soon afterward, a missing infant was discovered, and suspicion fell upon Tarrare. With the possibility of cannibalism hanging over him, he was swiftly dismissed from the hospital.
Death and Autopsy:
In 1798, Tarrare was found in a dilapidated hospital in Versailles. A physician examining him discovered his body in a deplorable state, confined to bed and gravely weakened. He claimed to have previously swallowed a gold fork that remained lodged inside him. However, an autopsy revealed that he had succumbed to tuberculosis. His body displayed numerous abnormalities, including an unusually large esophagus, a stomach that filled much of his abdominal cavity, and an enlarged gallbladder and liver. No gold fork was found.
Legacy:
Tarrare's insatiable appetite and bizarre life continue to fascinate and perplex medical professionals to this day. He remains the most famed example of extreme food consumption in human history, a testament to the still-unsolved mysteries of the human body.
