Depth-Defying Catch: Fishing Guide Reels In 800m-Deep Chimaera

Chilling Find:

Fishing guide Olav Landahl experienced a heart-stopping moment when his fishing line suddenly tugged at a depth of 800 meters. As he eagerly reeled in his catch, a peculiar sight emerged from the depths - a fish creature with bulging eyes and a long, slender tail.

Unveiling a Prehistoric Wonder:

Landahl soon realized he had stumbled upon a deep-sea dweller known as the chimaera, or ghost shark. This distant cousin of sharks is typically found at impressive depths, and its large eyes serve to enhance its vision in the murky abyss, similar to cats' night vision.

A Fishing Expedition with a Twist:

Out to catch blue halibut off the shores of Andoya, Norway, Landahl's four baited lines yielded two halibut before the unexpected encounter with the chimera. As he exclaimed, "I felt something was on the line that was pretty big... It took me almost half an hour to pull it up from 800 meters deep."

The Unexpected Passenger:

"On two of the hooks were two halibut, which I was very happy about. And then I saw something else," Landahl recounted. "It was quite a surprise. I had never seen anything like it before. It looked a bit like a dinosaur."

A Culinary Adventure:

Though the chimaera fell victim to the rapid pressure change during its ascent, Landahl, guided by a knowledgeable colleague, decided to cook the unusual creature. The fisherman described its taste as "really good," akin to cod but even more delectable.
