Biography of Tarun Khanna
Tarun Khanna is an American professor of Indian origin, writer, and specialist in economic strategy. Currently, Khanna holds the position of professor at Harvard Business School. Since 2010, he has been leading the South Asia Initiative at Harvard University. Khanna joined the faculty at Harvard in 1993, earning a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and computer science from Princeton University in 1988, and a doctorate in economics from Harvard Business School in 1993.
Research Interests
Khanna's research interests include studying the effects of diaspora, economic development, emerging markets, globalization, international business, and strategy. He has authored numerous academic papers, books, and articles in economic and management journals. Some of his most notable works include "Billions of Entrepreneurs: How China and India are Reshaping Their Futures and Yours" (2008) and "Winning in Emerging Markets: A Roadmap for Strategy and Execution" (2010), which he co-authored.
Awards and Memberships
In 2007, Khanna was nominated as a Young Global Leader (under 40) by the World Economic Forum. In 2009, he became a member of the Academy of International Business. He also serves on the board of directors of companies such as AES Corporation, SKS Microfinance, GVK Bio Sciences, and TVS Logistics.
Early Life and Education
Tarun Khanna was born in 1968 in India and moved to the United States to pursue higher education. In 1984, he became a student at Princeton University, graduating with honors in 1988. Transitioning from electrical engineering and computer science, Khanna shifted his focus to economics and business studies, eventually earning a doctoral degree from Harvard.
Career and Achievements
After working on Wall Street for a period of time, Khanna became a professor of business administration at Harvard Business School, eventually achieving the position of professor. In May 2004, Khanna was appointed to the Jorge Paulo Lemann Chair. Since then, he has divided his time between teaching, conducting research, collaborating with multinational corporations, local companies, and investors in emerging markets worldwide.
Khanna has led courses on economic strategy in Harvard's master's program and served as the chair of the executive education program on strategy, leadership, and management. Currently, he is the director of the South Asia Initiative and oversees the activities of his faculty in India.
Khanna is married and resides in Newton, Massachusetts, with his wife, daughter, and son.
