Early Life and Chess Journey
Born in Baku, Azerbaijan, Alla Kushnir began her chess journey at the young age of 10. Her first mentor was Azer Zeynaly, a promising young player who later became a champion and a respected figure in the chess world. Under Zeynaly's guidance, Kushnir displayed exceptional talent and dedication, quickly progressing through the ranks.
Professional Career in the Soviet Union
In 1947, Kushnir joined the chess club at the Baku House of Pioneers, where she honed her skills under the watchful eye of coach Suren Abramyan. She went on to graduate from the geological faculty of the Azerbaijan Industrial Institute with a degree in engineering geology.
Kushnir achieved notable success on the chessboard. She won the Soviet Women's Championship three times (1960, 1962, 1963) and was a contender for the World Women's Chess Championship in 1961, 1964, and 1967. In addition, she represented the Soviet Union as a member of their victorious Olympic teams in 1963 and 1966.
In recognition of her accomplishments, Kushnir was awarded the prestigious title of Honored Master of Sports of the USSR in 1967. She also captured the championship title of the "Burevestnik" sports society five times.
Emigration and Life in Israel
In 1973, Kushnir married football commentator Valery Vinokurov and moved to Moscow. From 2001 onwards, she resided in Ashkelon, Israel, where she continued to be a respected figure in the chess community.
