Biography of Tcheky Karyo
Tcheky Karyo is a French actor of Turkish and Sephardic Jewish descent. He was born in Istanbul, Turkey, as Baruh Djaki Karyo, the son of a Sephardic father from Istanbul and a Jewish mother from Thessaloniki. He grew up in Paris, France, as his family moved there when he was young. The spelling of his name, Djaki, was later changed to Tcheky in the French transliteration.
Early Career
Karyo studied drama at the Cours Simon and later became a member of Daniel Sorano's company, where he played many classical roles. He then joined the National Theatre of Strasbourg, participating in both contemporary and classical plays. During this time, he also made his mark in the film industry, starring in notable films such as "The Bear" as one of the hunters, and "Nikita" directed by Luc Besson, where he portrayed the mentor-spy of the protagonist.
Hollywood and Television
Karyo has also appeared in numerous Hollywood films, often playing French characters, much like Jean Reno. In 2014 and 2016, he portrayed Julien Baptiste in the popular drama series "The Missing" on BBC One / Starz, for which he received critical acclaim. In 2018, Karyo starred in the film "Mary Magdalene" directed by Garth Davis and written by Helen Edmundson.
Music Career
In addition to his acting career, Karyo is also a musician and songwriter. In 2006, he released the album "Ce lien qui nous unit" (English: "The Bond That Connects Us") and in 2013, he released the album "Credo" on his 60th birthday.

Karyo was nominated for the César Award for Most Promising Actor for his role in the film "The Informant". He received the Jean Gabin Award for his acting talent in 1986. He was previously married to French actress Isabelle Pasco.
