Political Journey

Strickland began his political career in 1976, running for the U.S. House of Representatives in Ohio's 6th Congressional District. He lost twice to incumbent William Harsha and once to Harsha's successor, Bob McEwen. In 1992, he ran again, this time against McEwen, who had been tarnished by a banking scandal. The 6th District was merged with the old 10th, resulting in Ohio losing a seat in Congress. Strickland faced a crowded field of challengers, including Patrick Buchanan, Dan Quayle, and Oliver North. Despite the challenges, Strickland narrowly won the 1992 election. He was unseated by the Republicans in 1994 but regained the seat in 1996. In 1998, Strickland defeated Nancy Hollister, after which he faced no serious challenges.
