Biography of Perlette Louise

Perlette Louise was born on June 8, 1946, in the village of Laborie. She received her primary education at a local kindergarten and girls' school. In January 1960, after completing school, Perlette Louise entered the monastery of St. Joseph as part of the Javouhey Scholarship program. She began her university education in October 1966, receiving a scholarship from the Canadian International Development Agency. Louise obtained a bachelor's degree in English and French at the University of the West Indies in Barbados.

Teaching and Academic Achievements

From 1969 to 1972, Louise taught at the St. Joseph monastery. In 1972, she pursued her studies in Canada through the Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship program, earning a master's degree in linguistics from Laval University. In 1976, Louise returned to her hometown and resumed teaching French at the St. Joseph monastery. After a few years, she became the Principal of the St. Lucia "A" Level College. When it merged with another prominent college, Morne Technical, to form the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, Perlette Louise became the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Science, and General Studies.

Further Education and Career

In the early 90s, Perlette Louise was invited to lecture in linguistics at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom. During this time, she also worked on her doctoral thesis, focusing on the development of education in small states. Upon her return to St. Lucia, she served as the Deputy Director of the college and later became its Director. In 1997, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II awarded Perlette Louise the title of Dame Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George for her contributions to the development of education in St. Lucia. In the same year, she assumed the position of Governor-General of St. Lucia, succeeding George Mallet.

Contributions and Recognition

In 1999, Perlette Louise received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University of Bristol. As the Governor-General, she continues to promote culture and education on the island. She actively participates in the Creative and Performing Arts Society, the New Day Theatre movement, and contributes to research for the Folk Research Centre and Mouvman Kweyol Sent Lisi. Through her dedication and achievements, Perlette Louise has made significant contributions to the development and advancement of education in St. Lucia.
