Early Life and Education
Born in 1859 to Armenian parents in Poland, Teodor Axentowicz was a renowned portrait artist. He studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts from 1879 to 1882 and subsequently in Paris from 1882 to 1895.
Artistic Career
After his studies, Axentowicz worked as an illustrator and traveled extensively to London and Rome, where he painted portraits. In 1895, he settled in Kraków and became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, where he taught until 1934.
Founding Artistic Institutions
Axentowicz played a pivotal role in the Polish art community. In 1897, he founded the Women's Art School and co-founded the artistic society "Sztuka," which organized exhibitions. In 1910, he became rector of the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts.
Portraits and Ethnographic Depictions
Axentowicz was known for his sensitive and realistic portraits. However, he also depicted scenes of ethnographic life, particularly among the Hutsuls and Polish Armenians. Notable works include "The Baptism of Armenia" and "Armenians in Poland."
Architectural Contributions
Axentowicz's contributions extended beyond painting. He designed stained glass windows for the Armenian Cathedral in Lviv, a testament to his commitment to his Armenian heritage.
Legacy
Teodor Axentowicz died in 1938 and was buried in the Rakowicki Cemetery in Kraków. He remains a celebrated figure in Polish art and is remembered for his exceptional talent as a portraitist and his influence on the artistic landscape of his time.
