Early Life and EducationTereza Cristina Corrêa da Costa Dias was born on July 6, 1954, in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. She holds a bachelor's degree in engineering from the Federal University of Viçosa in Minas Gerais.
Career in Agriculture
Tereza Cristina's career in agriculture began in 2001, when she became the director of the Mato Grosso do Sul Federation of Agriculture and Livestock (Famasul) and the Mato Grosso do Sul Seed Producers Association (Aprosul). From 2003 to 2006, she served as the director of the Mato Grosso do Sul Breeders Association (Acrissul).
Political Career
In 2007, Tereza Cristina was appointed Secretary of Agrarian Development, Production, Industry, Trade, and Tourism for Mato Grosso do Sul. She also held the position of CEO of the Mineral Resources Management Company (MS-MINERAL) from 2011 to 2014.
In 2014, Tereza Cristina was elected to the Brazilian National Congress as a member of the Socialist Party (PSB). She became the deputy leader of the PSB's parliamentary group in 2014 and its leader in 2017. In October 2017, she left the PSB and joined the Democrats party (DEM).
Minister of Agriculture
Tereza Cristina was appointed Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food Supply in the Bolsonaro cabinet on November 7, 2018. She took office on January 1, 2019, succeeding Blairo Maggi.
Controversies
Tereza Cristina's support for the use of pesticides has drawn criticism from environmentalists, who have dubbed her the "poison muse." However, she maintains that the development of new pesticides will benefit the environment by being more effective and therefore requiring less usage.
