Greek Professional Basketball Player: Thanasis Antetokounmpo
Thanasis Antetokounmpo is a Greek professional basketball player of Nigerian descent who currently plays as a small forward for the Milwaukee Bucks. He was drafted 51st overall by the New York Knicks in the 2014 NBA draft.
Early Career
Antetokounmpo began his professional career with the Greek second division club Filathlitikos in 2012. During his first season, he averaged 12.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game. He initially entered the 2013 NBA draft alongside his brother, Giannis, but later withdrew.
NBA Development League
In 2013, Antetokounmpo was selected ninth overall by the Delaware 87ers in the D-League draft. He made his D-League debut on November 23rd, scoring 14 points in a loss against the Canton Charge. He was named to the D-League All-Defensive Third Team.
NBA Draft and New York Knicks
In 2014, Antetokounmpo was drafted by the New York Knicks in the second round of the NBA draft. He joined the Knicks for the 2014 NBA Summer League, averaging 3.0 points and 1.8 rebounds in five games. He signed with the Westchester Knicks in November 2014 and was named to the D-League All-Defensive Second Team in 2015.
After another stint with the Knicks in the 2015 NBA Summer League, Antetokounmpo signed a contract with the New York Knicks in August 2015. However, he was waived before the start of the season and returned to the Westchester Knicks. In January 2016, he signed a 10-day contract with the Knicks, making his NBA debut that night. The Knicks declined to renew his contract, and he rejoined the Westchester Knicks.
Return to Greece
In 2017, Antetokounmpo signed a two-year contract with the Greek club Panathinaikos.
Personal Life
Antetokounmpo was born in Athens, Greece to Nigerian parents. He officially obtained Greek citizenship in 2013. He has a younger brother, Giannis, who also plays in the NBA for the Milwaukee Bucks.
