Biography of Theo Adam

Theo Adam is a German singer and bass-baritone who actively performed in concerts and opera productions from the 1940s to the 1990s. He gained particular recognition for his portrayal of characters in Richard Wagner's operas. Adam was born in Dresden and began singing at a young age in the Dresden church choir. From 1946 to 1949, he studied together with Rudolf Dietrich.

Adam made his operatic debut in Dresden in 1949, where he performed the role of the Hermit in Carl Maria von Weber's "Der Freischütz" at the legendary Semperoper. In 1952, he joined the Berlin State Opera and made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival in the same year, albeit in a small role. He continued to return to Bayreuth annually, taking on various roles such as Heinrich der Vogler in "Lohengrin" (1954), Titurel in "Parsifal" (1954), Fasolt in "Das Rheingold" (1958), and Wotan in "Der Ring des Nibelungen" (1963).

Adam's repertoire expanded over time, and he took on roles such as Amfortas in "Parsifal," Hans Sachs and Veit Pogner in "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg," and the title role in "The Flying Dutchman." In 1955, he was awarded the title of "kammersänger."

In 1967, Adam made his debut as Wotan at the Royal Opera in London. He first appeared as Ochs in Richard Strauss' "Der Rosenkavalier" at the Salzburg Festival in 1969 and returned three years later to perform the role of Wozzeck in Alban Berg's opera. In 1970, he portrayed Pizarro in Beethoven's "Fidelio" to commemorate the composer's 200th birthday. In 1972, Adam played the lead role in the revised version of Mozart's "Don Giovanni" at the Vienna State Opera.

On February 7, 1969, Adam made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as Hans Sachs. He returned to the Metropolitan Opera in the same year to perform as Wotan in a production of "Der Ring des Nibelungen" alongside renowned artists such as Birgit Nilsson, Lili Chookasian, and Jon Vickers, conducted by Herbert von Karajan.

After his performances in 1972, Adam disappeared from the Metropolitan Opera stage for 16 years. He made a final return in March 1988 to portray Wotan in "Die Walküre."

Currently, Theo Adam resides in Dresden, where he is married and has three children.
