Willem Frederik Gerard Verhey

Willem Frederik Gerard Verhey was a Dutch composer who was born in The Hague in 1833. He was a talented musician who studied piano and cello at the Hague Conservatory. After graduating, he continued his studies in composition with Woldemar Bargiel in Rotterdam.

Teaching and Musical Compositions

Verhey pursued a career in music, teaching piano and music theory at the Rotterdam School of Music for many years. Throughout his career, he composed various musical works, including two symphonies and several instrumental concertos. His compositions were well-received, particularly his Clarinet Concerto Op. 28 (1884), Violin Concerto in A minor Op. 54, and two Concertos for Flute and Orchestra (Op. 43 in D minor and Op. 57 in A minor).

Operatic Works

Beyond instrumental music, Verhey also ventured into opera, composing three works: "Eine Johannisfeier auf Amron" (1880), "Imelda" (1885), and "König Arpad" (1888). These operas were performed at the German Opera in Rotterdam, showcasing Verhey's abilities as a dramatic composer.

Legacy and Recognition

Verhey's contributions to Dutch music were acknowledged in 1969 when a street in Tilburg was named "Verheijstraat" in his honor. This street connects Sweelincklaan and Verhulstlaan, symbolizing the connection between Verhey and other Dutch musical luminaries.
