Johannes Henricus Goeje
Early Life and Education
Johannes Henricus Goeje was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on January 13, 1831. He displayed an early aptitude for languages and pursued his studies at the University of Leiden, where he specialized in Oriental Studies.
In 1831, Goeje was appointed Professor of Oriental Languages at the University of Franeker. Ten years later, in 1841, he moved to the University of Groningen, where he held the same position. In 1845, he was appointed Professor of Oriental Languages at the prestigious Leiden University, a post he held until his retirement in 1893.
Goeje made significant contributions to the study of Middle Eastern history and literature, particularly in the fields of Arabic historiography and Samaritan history and literature. He published numerous scholarly works, including:
"Commentatio de carmine Montenabbii in Europa nondum edito" (1840)
"Commenlatio de versione arabico-samaritana etc." (1846)"Commentatio in historiam gentis samaritanae" (1846)
"Liber Josuae" (1848)
"Lexicon geographicum" (1852-1864)
Honors and Legacy
Goeje was widely recognized for his scholarship and received numerous honors, including membership in the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. His works continue to be consulted by scholars in the fields of Middle Eastern studies and linguistics. Johannes Henricus Goeje passed away in Leiden on August 27, 1908, leaving behind a lasting legacy as one of the most influential Orientalists of his time.
