Biography of Teodor Leszetycki
Teodor Leszetycki was a Polish pianist, music educator, and composer. He was born into a family of a teacher who gave him his first music lessons. Discovering his talent, young Leszetycki performed for the first time at the age of nine, playing Concertino by Czerny with an orchestra conducted by Franz Mozart in Lemberg (now Lviv). Shortly after, the family moved to Vienna, where he became a student of Czerny himself. Leszetycki soon started giving concerts while also studying composition and law.

Years in St. Petersburg
In 1852, the pianist arrived in St. Petersburg, where he performed in the presence of Emperor Nicholas I. Leszetycki stayed in the city for over 25 years, engaging in teaching and concert activities. When the St. Petersburg Conservatory was opened in 1862, its director Anton Rubinstein invited Leszetycki to be the professor of the piano class, a position he held until 1878. After leaving St. Petersburg for Vienna, Leszetycki continued teaching.

Influence as a Teacher
Leszetycki nurtured over a thousand pianists, many of whom had successful careers on concert stages throughout the 20th century. Among his notable students were Arthur Schnabel, Vasily Safonov, Ellie Ney, Ignacy Friedman, Osip Gabrilovich, Benno Moiseiwitsch, Isabella Vengerova, Alexander Brailowsky, and Mieczysław Horszowski, among many others. In his teaching, Leszetycki paid special attention to the quality of sound, melodic expressiveness, and the context of virtuosic passages within the overall structure of a piece. Although some music historians and critics refer to this as "Leszetycki's Method," he himself claimed to have inherited this teaching method from Czerny without adding or changing anything.

Repertoire and Compositions
Leszetycki's repertoire mainly consisted of Beethoven's music, which he developed a love for under the guidance of Czerny, who personally knew the composer. He also performed the works of romantic composers such as Chopin, Schumann, and Liszt with great success. Thanks to Leszetycki, the sonatas of Franz Schubert, which had been neglected for some time, reentered the concert repertoire, and Arthur Schnabel became one of the first active performers of these sonatas. Leszetycki himself composed several original works, including a Piano Concerto in C minor, an opera, and numerous solo piano pieces filled with elegance and the lightness of style.
