Wolfgang Boettcher: German Cellist and Pedagog
Wolfgang Boettcher was a prominent German cellist who made significant contributions to music education and ensemble performance.
Early Life and Education
Born in Germany, Boettcher studied the cello at Berlin's Hanns Eisler School of Music under the renowned cellist Richard Klemm.
Career
Berlin Philharmonic OrchestraFrom 1957 to 1976, Boettcher served as vice-principal cellist of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under the legendary conductor Herbert von Karajan. However, he later transitioned to focus on teaching.
Professor at Berlin University of the Arts
In 1976, Boettcher became a professor at the Berlin University of the Arts, where he continued to influence generations of cellists.
International Recognition
In 2002, Boettcher co-founded the International Emmanuel Feuermann Cello Competition alongside his colleague Boris Pergamenschikov.
Ensemble Playing
Boettcher possessed exceptional ensemble playing skills. He won an award for his duet performance with his sister, pianist Ursula Trede, at the 1958 Munich competition. In 1972, he established the "Twelve Cellists" ensemble and performed for many years in a string quartet led by Thomas Brandis.
Recordings and Collaborations
Boettcher's recordings include Johann Sebastian Bach's Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello (2008) and works by 20th-century composers such as Paul Hindemith, Ernst Krenek, György Ligeti, Luigi Dallapiccola, Hans Werner Henze, Witold Lutosławski, and others. He closely collaborated with many of these composers. He premiered Aribert Reimann's Double Concerto for Violin and Cello with violinist Ulf Hoelscher.
Collaboration with Winfried Pape
Together with musicologist Winfried Pape, Boettcher authored "The Violoncello: History, Structure, Technique, Repertoire" (1996, second edition 2005).
