Early Life and Education
Theodore Balat was born in 1858 in Bicske, Hungary. At the tender age of 11, he entered the minor seminary and joined the Secular Franciscan Order. Upon completing his studies, he enrolled in the major seminary and became a member of the Order of Friars Minor Observants in 1880.
Missionary Work in China
In 1884, Father Balat embarked on a missionary journey to China, where he devoted his life to spreading the Christian faith. He was ordained a priest in Hong Kong that same year. Bishop Gregory Mary Grassi assigned him as a teacher at the minor seminary. Additionally, he served as a novice master for the Franciscans and a spiritual director for the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary.
Martyrdom during the Boxer Rebellion
China faced a tumultuous period with the Boxer Rebellion from 1899 to 1900. During this uprising, Christians faced intense persecution. By order of the governor of Shanxi Province, numerous Christians were arrested, including Father Balat. On July 9, 1900, he was executed along with a group of 26 other Catholics for his Christian beliefs.
Beatification and Canonization
Father Balat's sacrifice and unwavering faith were recognized by the Catholic Church. On November 27, 1946, Pope Pius XII beatified him. On October 1, 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized Father Balat along with 120 other Chinese martyrs.
Commemoration and Legacy
The memory of Father Balat continues to be honored within the Catholic Church. His feast day is celebrated on July 9th. He is remembered as a courageous martyr who died for his faith and inspires countless believers around the world.
