Biography of Theodoros Pangalos
Theodoros Pangalos, the current Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece, was born in August 1938 in Elefsina. He studied at the University of Athens and the Sorbonne, where he obtained his Doctorate in Philosophy. During the regime of the "black colonels" in Greece, from 1968 onwards, Pangalos actively participated in the dissident movement and was subsequently stripped of his Greek citizenship.
From 1969 to 1978, Pangalos lectured and conducted research on issues of economic development and planning at the Sorbonne University. He also served as the head of the Institute of Economic Development. Upon returning to Greece, he worked as a lawyer in Athens.
In his political career, Pangalos served as the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece from 1985 to 1988 and again from 1993 to 1994. In 1994, he became the Minister of Transport and Communications. Since 1996, he has been serving as the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Pangalos is married and has a son and a daughter. He has made several official visits to Moscow, including one in March 1996, during which a visa facilitation agreement between Russia and Greece was signed. As the head of Greece's foreign policy, Pangalos has held discussions with high-ranking Russian officials, including Secretary of the Security Council Nikolai Bordyuzha, Chairman of the State Duma Gennady Seleznev, and Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov.
During these meetings, protocols were signed for the opening of Consulates General in Moscow and Athens, as well as for the joint publication of a collection based on archival documents from the foreign policy agencies of both countries.
