Birth and Early Life
Thomas Astruc was born on January 18, 1975, in Paris, France. His parents were avid fans of David Bowie, inspiring them to name their son after Major Tom, a character from Bowie's iconic song "Space Oddity." Astruc later paid homage to Bowie by naming a character in his animated series "Ziggy," after Bowie's alter ego Ziggy Stardust.
Education and Inspiration
Astruc's father's passion for collecting comic books exposed him to various comics from around the world, which became a source of inspiration for his future work. Despite initially planning to pursue a career in dentistry or engineering, Astruc eventually became fascinated with computer animation. He successfully enrolled at Gobelins, a prestigious school of visual arts in Paris, graduating in 1995.
Early Career
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Astruc worked as a layout artist on animated series such as "Bob Morane," "Blake and Mortimer," and "Diabolik." He also contributed to the storyboards for films like "Wasabi" and "Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra."
Breakthrough Success
Astruc's breakthrough came as the storyboard supervisor for the animated series "Totally Spies!" from Marathon Media. He continued to refine his craft as one of the storyboard artists for "W.I.T.C.H." and as the first assistant director and storyboard supervisor for "A.T.O.M." From 2006 to 2010, he directed and wrote for the series "Mickido" and "Wakfu."
"Miraculous" Franchise
In 2013, Astruc joined ZAG Entertainment, where he created the animated series "Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir." The series and its subsequent franchise have become his most renowned works.
Personal Life
During the development of "Miraculous," Astruc was in a relationship with a woman of Asian descent. He has stated that the characters of Marinette's parents were inspired by him and his girlfriend, with Marinette representing their fictional daughter. Astruc is now married and has a daughter.
