Thomas Gibson was born on July 3, 1962, in Charleston, South Carolina, USA. He began his acting career at the age of ten, participating in children's theater productions. Gibson performed and trained with the 'Footlight Players' at the Dock Street Theater and landed his first starring role in 1973.

Six years later, Gibson enrolled in the College of Charleston and participated in the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. He was then encouraged by a unique opportunity to audition for the Juilliard School, where he won a scholarship and pursued his education. Gibson graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, fully immersed in his pursuit of knowledge.

Gibson's professional debut came in 1985 in David Hare's project "A Map of the World." In 1992, he experienced a breakthrough in his career when he played one of the leading roles, Stephen Chase, in Ron Howard's adventure drama "Far and Away."
