Early Life and EducationThomas Duane was born and raised in Flushing, Queens. He attended St. Andrew Avellino School and St. Francis Preparatory High School before embarking on a career as a stockbroker on Wall Street. Inspired by his passion for public service, he later transitioned to government. In 2004, Duane earned a degree from Harvard Kennedy School's Senior Executives in State and Local Government Program as a David Bohnett Foundation Fellow.
Political Career
New York City Council (1992-1998)In 1991, Duane was elected to the New York City Council, becoming one of the first openly gay members. He served as a forceful advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, collaborating with Christine Quinn and Antonio Pagan, the other openly gay council member at the time.
New York State Senate (1999-2012)
Elected to the New York State Senate in 1998, Duane assumed office in 1999 and served until 2012. As a senator, he played a pivotal role in the passage of the Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act (SONDA) in 2002, which prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation. He was also instrumental in enacting the Timothy's Law, which required mental health parity from insurance companies in 2006.
Duane was a prominent advocate for marriage equality. After the Senate's failed vote in 2009, then-New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn thanked Duane and the Senate leadership for bringing the bill to a vote. After leaving the Senate, Duane continued his advocacy work for LGBTQ+ rights, children in foster care, and individuals living with HIV/AIDS. He founded Tom Duane Strategies, Inc., a firm that partners with organizations dedicated to improving the lives of New Yorkers.
Duane has been an outspoken critic of the Trump administration and a staunch supporter of LGBTQ+ rights. He serves on the board of directors for the New York City Anti-Violence Project and has received numerous awards for his contributions to various causes.
