Thomas Keith

Early Life and Education

Thomas Keith initially pursued a career in art at Aberdeen University, beforeswitching to medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He received his medical degree in 1848.

Medical Career

Keith made significant contributions to the field of gynecology. In 1862, he performed the first successful ovariotomy (removal of the ovary) without prior observation of the procedure. He resided in Edinburgh until 1888 before relocating to London, where he died.

Keith's notable medical publications include:

"200 cases of ovariotomy" (Edinburgh Medical Journ., 1867-1874)
"Suppurating ovarian cysts" (ib., 1875)
"Cases of removal of the uterus for fibrocystic tumor" (Lancet, 1875)
Photography Enthusiasm

Beyond his medical accomplishments, Keith was also an early proponent of photography in Great Britain. From 1853 to 1856, he captured numerous striking images, primarily urban scenes of Edinburgh. He co-founded the Scottish Photographic Society in 1857.
