Early Life and Education
Vladimir Nikolaevich Serovwas born on November 24, 1931, in Sverdlovsk, present-day Yekaterinburg, Russia. His parents were Nikolai Alexandrovich Serov (1901-1942) and Raisa Zakharovna Fedina (1900-1982).
Medical Career
After graduating from the Gorky State Medical Institute in 1955, Serov worked as an obstetrician-gynecologist in a district hospital in Ust-Kulom, Komi ASSR. He later pursued postgraduate studies at the Research Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology and became an assistant professor at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the First Moscow Medical Institute named after I.M. Sechenov (1960-1970).
In 1962, Serov defended his candidate's dissertation, followed by his doctoral dissertation in 1969. He became a professor in 1969 and the head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the dental faculty of the same institute.
Research and Contributions
Serov's research focused on obstetric and gynecological emergencies, including postpartum hemorrhage, hemorrhagic shock, sepsis, obstetric peritonitis, cardiovascular diseases during pregnancy, and gynecological endocrinology.
Obstetric Emergencies:
Serov established a system of scientific concepts for the prevention of maternal mortality and identified high-risk groups. He developed a theory of life-threatening obstetric hemorrhage and characterized its features. His studies explored diagnostic and treatment methods for hemorrhagic shock, including parameters for infusion therapy.
Gynecological Endocrinology:
Serov's original work on postpartum neuroendocrine disorders included the study of neuroendocrine syndrome, functional amenorrhea-galactorrhea, and "secondary" polycystic ovary syndrome. He elucidated key aspects of their pathogenesis and proposed effective treatments.
Serov also investigated the influence of hormonal contraceptives on reproductive function and women's health. He demonstrated the protective effects of hormonal contraception on hyperplastic processes in the endometrium and its beneficial effects on metabolic syndrome in patients with postpartum endocrine disorders.
Publications and Innovations
Throughout his career, Serov has authored over 500 scientific papers, including 35 monographs and textbooks. He holds 18 author's certificates and patents for innovative diagnostic and therapeutic methods in obstetrics and gynecology. Under his supervision and consultation, 111 dissertations were defended, including 40 doctoral dissertations.
Honors and Recognitions
Serov was elected a Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (AMN USSR) in 1982 and an Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (RAMN) in 1999. He was awarded the title of Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation and served as President (1991-2001) and Vice-President (2001-present) of the Russian Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
