Robert East was an esteemed Australian politician and diplomat. He served as the Chief Administrator of Papua New Guinea from 1974 to 1975, playing a crucial role in the transition of the country to independence.
Early Career
East's career in diplomacy began in 1946 with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs. From 1947 to 1950, he served on the United Nations Committee on Indonesia, making significant contributions to Indonesia's independence from the Netherlands.
Ambassadorship
Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, East served as Special Commissioner and later Ambassador to Malaysia. He then served as Ambassador to Thailand from 1969 to 1974.
Chief Administrator
In 1974, East was appointed as the Chief Administrator of Papua New Guinea, where he oversaw the final stages of the country's independence. He held this position until 1975.
Post-Administration
Following his tenure in Papua New Guinea, East served as Ambassador to Papua New Guinea from 1975 to 1978. He then held the post of Ambassador to Indonesia from 1978 to 1981.
Retirement
