Biography of Thomas Mayne Reid
Thomas Mayne Reid was an English writer, known for his adventure novels and works for children and young adults. He was born in Ireland into a minister's family and received his education in Belfast. In 1840, he embarked on a journey to the United States in search of adventure. During the Mexican-American War from 1846 to 1848, Reid served as a journalist. He was wounded in battle and returned to Europe.
Literary Career
After his return to Europe, Reid began his literary career in London. In 1850, he published his novel "The Rifle Rangers," which was inspired by the events of the Mexican-American War. Following this, Reid wrote 22 stories for children and young adults under the pseudonym "Captain Mayne Reid" and 28 novels for adults.
Name Usage
In the Russian language, it became customary to use Thomas Mayne Reid's name as "Mayne Reid," with only the second part of his name being declined. In the Soviet Union, Reid's books gained great popularity, while he was almost unknown to the wider public in his home country and the United States in the 20th century.
