Early Life and Political Activism
Born on June 13, 1945, in St. Patrick, Grenada, Thomas Tillman embarked on a path of political activism that would shape his future. His involvement led to his imprisonment for two years during the reign of Maurice Rupert Bishop.
Parliamentary Career
In 1984, Tillman was elected to the House of Representatives for the constituency of St. Patrick East. He subsequently served as Deputy Minister of Legal Affairs from 1984 to 1990.
Founding the NDC and Rising through the Ranks
As a co-founder of the New National Liberal Party (later renamed the National Democratic Congress) in 1987, Tillman rose through the ranks, serving as Assistant General Secretary. In 1990, he unsuccessfully contested the elections but was appointed Deputy Minister of Labour and Tourism.
Leadership of the NDC and Opposition
After the NDC's defeat in the 1999 elections, Tillman became the party's uncontested leader. In 2003, he led the party to victory, securing seven parliamentary seats. He served as leader of the opposition for 13 years.
Prime Ministership
Following the 2008 general elections, the NDC won a majority of parliamentary seats, with Tillman becoming Prime Minister on July 9, 2008. He formed a 17-member Cabinet, including two members from non-governmental organizations.
Current Prime Ministership
Tillman continues to serve as Prime Minister of Grenada, enjoying significant popularity among the electorate.
