Childhood and Early Life
Thomas Turgoose was born on February 11, 1992, in Grimsby, England. His parents divorced when he was one year old, and he lived with his mother and two brothers, while his other two brothers lived with his father. His mother, Sharon Turgoose, was diagnosed with cancer and spent little time with her children. Thomas lost his mother at the age of 15, shortly after he became a film star. In an interview, he recalled, "I grew up with my mum. My dad wasn't around. She was the one I could always talk to, she was my best mate. We knew she was struggling. She was in a lot of pain all the time. When she passed away, it wasn't that it was a relief, it was just that now she's at peace and she's not in any more pain."
Troubled Youth
Growing up, Turgoose exhibited a difficult temperament. He skipped school, engaged in fights with peers, spent excessive time playing video games, and developed a habit of drinking alcohol and taking drugs. In a bid to gain attention, he vandalized property by smashing car windows. He was also a fan of Grimsby Town and Manchester United football clubs.
Breakout Role in 'This Is England'
In 2006, Shane Meadows began production of 'This Is England,' a film exploring the influence of neo-Nazi ideologies on English youth during the Falklands War. Thomas, who had just been removed from a school play for misbehavior, auditioned for the lead role. His aggressive and apathetic demeanor caught the filmmakers' attention, and he was cast as Shaun.
Film Success
'This Is England' premiered in 2006 and became an international success. Thomas received a British Independent Film Award for his performance and established himself as a promising young actor. He subsequently attended school and took acting classes to enhance his craft. In 2007, Meadows cast him again in 'Somers Town,' in which he portrayed a troubled teenager struggling with alcoholism. The film garnered critical acclaim, and Thomas won Best Actor at the Tribeca Film Festival founded by Robert De Niro.
Subsequent Roles
Thomas went on to appear in television series and British talk shows. With limited formal training, he often improvised his lines, having rarely read the entire script. In 2017, he starred in 'Kingsman: The Golden Circle' and played a major role in the science fiction series 'Intergalactic.' He also featured in the action film 'The Driver' and Shane Meadows' follow-up work, 'The Hanging Tree.'
Personal Life
Thomas frequently discusses his personal life in interviews, crediting his wife for her support in his acting career. He met Charlotte Revell, his future wife, at the age of 15 in Grimsby. They began dating, and she helped him cope with the tragic loss of his mother. The couple married in December 2018, and they have a son together. Fatherhood has had a profound impact on Thomas. He has reduced his alcohol consumption and revamped his lifestyle.
Current Projects and Interests
Currently, Thomas remains focused on his acting career and frequently appears in television projects. He is a sought-after British actor, and in 2024, he starred in Bong Joon-ho's science fiction film 'Mickey 17,' which is set to release in 2025. Outside of filming, Thomas enjoys playing video games, especially football simulations. He is also an avid fan of McDonald's and golf.
