President Thongloun Sisoulith: A Statesman's Journey

Early Life and Education

Thongloun Sisoulith was born on November 10, 1945, in Houaphan Province, Laos. From 1962 to 1969, he studied at the Pathet Lao Pedagogical College. He later pursued his education in the Soviet Union, graduating from the Philological Faculty of the Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute in 1978 and earning a doctorate from the Academy of Social Sciences under the CPSU Central Committee in 1984.

Political Career

Sisoulith's political career began as Deputy Foreign Minister of Laos from 1987 to 1992, followed by Minister of Labor and Social Welfare from 1993 to 1996. He became a member of the National Assembly, serving as Chairman of the International Relations Committee from 1997 to 2001 and Chairman of the State Planning and Investment Committee as well as the Energy Committee from 2001 to 2006. In 2001, he joined the Politburo of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP).

He was appointed Deputy Prime Minister of Laos from 2001 to 2016 and served concurrently as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2006 to 2016. At the 10th Congress of the LPRP, the country's sole ruling party, he was nominated as Prime Minister on January 23, 2016. His candidacy was approved by the National Assembly on April 20, 2016. On March 22, 2021, he became President of Laos.
