Early Life and Education
Alexandros Zaimis was born the son of Andreas Zaimis. He pursued legal studies in Paris, France.
Political Career
After serving for several years in the Ministry of the Interior, Zaimis dedicated himself to journalism and politics. In 1850, he was elected as a deputy and remained an opposition figure during the reign of King Otto I.
When King George I ascended to the throne in 1864, he appointed Zaimis as Commissioner of Greece to the Ionian Islands. Zaimis received the formal transfer of power over the islands from the British Lord Commissioner.
Multiple Presidencies and Cabinet Roles
Zaimis held the position of President of the Chamber several times and served in various government cabinets. In 1869, amidst pressure from major European powers to suppress the Cretan uprising, Zaimis became President of the Cabinet and agreed to the signing of the Protocol of Paris. The cabinet resigned the following year due to a crisis stemming from the murder of British travelers near Athens.
Zaimis resumed the role of Prime Minister in 1876 and served as Minister of Justice in a coalition government in 1877.
